St Kilda Stories
A 1942 AWAS officer and her chocolate Kooglhoupf. An encounter with a seagull on St Kilda Pier. A Pride marcher channelling Wonder Woman. Perhaps you never knew that St Kilda was held together entirely by folklore, hearsay and historical fact, but if you live locally then perhaps you did.
ST KILDA STORIES – a collection of original, bitter-sweet monologues with a seaside aftertaste penned especially for Melbourne Fringe by playwrights from Melbourne Writers’ Theatre.
Every year on the other side of town we showcase the best-of-the-best monologues in ‘The Melbourne Monologues’ , our signature show – this year we’re catching the #96 tram down to the National Theatre Melbourne, because we love the views across the water and St Kilda just has more Stories. We asked a team of writers to come up with five 10-minute monologues and they did this with gravity and sincerity. This was followed by a further 3 drafts of each script (5 in one case, but in the end it was worth it); 4 weeks of intense planning; and the casting of 5 actors we’ve used before but who are really surprising us this time. 50 minutes. Laughs, surprises, one strange moment.
Come, watch, enjoy.
